Hi, Ed - how are you?
Blog monetization is, IMO, different with what blogging can do for you. You are using your blog very well in bringing in business leads. In your case, it seems that you take blogging and your blog as vehicles to drive in leads for your real business - which many recommend on how you should purpose your blogs.
Blog monetization is more on-site monetization - ad placements, premium contents, etc.
There is no right or wrong here - it's just the case of what's your plan with your blog.
"I even use it to get my head out of a funk. It puts my attitude on the right path" - that's also one of a big benefit of blogging people are mission on!
Thanks for dropping by :)

Noob,
Naturally the thought of monetizing my blog is intriguing, but I've never seriously investigated it, other than having a basic understanding of how and what the potential is. I blog to provide valuable insight on branding to small businesses and to get leads to new business. For the last several years income from online leads have grown each year. last year for instance it represented about 45% of my income. In October I was in Tanzania branding a new transit agency.
Blogging has delivered speaking opportunities, publicity, consulting and design projects and business contacts. Blogging has help build my expert profile and introduced me to countless fellow bloggers. I enjoy the blogging neighbourhood and the conversations that ensue.
I preach the benefits of blogging when ever I have the opportunity. It absolutely befuddles me why more people don't take up the effort. There are just so many benefits. I even use it to get my head out of a funk. It puts my attitude on the right path. I view all of my on and offline endeavours as marketing and educational. I love the conversation.
