Where to Find Killer Business Idea
A classic question - Where to find killer business idea?
The answer is different from one person to another.
In my case, unless the eureka moment strikes me - that could be anywhere, I usually seek for inspiration and business ideas from the places where I often visits. That would includes:
- The comfort of my home, browsing the Net.
I usually look into:- TrendWatching.com and SpringWise.com to follow the current hip biz ideas.
- Sitepoint.com Marketplace to see what trend of sites that attract most people to bid and buy, and at what price tag.
- Forums to learn what people is talking about lately.
- At coffee shops.
Watching people come and go, looking at people having conversations, and seeing the barristas work often inspire me of something smart :) - Attending trade shows.
Sounds classic, but we can learn a lot from other businesses. Moreover, we can think of ways that can better a business, thus giving us an idea or two about how to build a better business. - Looking at children play.
Again, sounds classic. But I can’t explain why looking at children playing their games sparks creativity and light bulbs in my head.
Sometimes killer business idea doesn’t mean it has to be ‘killer’ or cutting edge. It could means doing something common slightlybetter.
How ’bout you - where do you find your ‘killer’ business idea?

Before you can receive fantastic returns from your killer business idea, you need to be able to fund it. Unfortunately, for many noobie entrepreneurs this can actually be much harder than finding the idea in the first place.
Also, its often the case that many noobie entrepreneurs don’t fully research their idea before investing their own or other people’s money into their idea. It’s wise to spend as much time as possible asking the opinions of other people as possible to sanity check your ideas.

Lee,
You are right about funding - this is one of the major factors why ideas fail to be realised.
Regarding idea sanity check you mention - IMO, it is necessary, but with caution - simply because the people you ask the opinion on your idea don’t always the right people to ask :) Ask a few right people might be better.
Thanks for your opinion!

I’ve always found it useful to be ‘inspired by’ other businesses that I find remarkable (or at least interesting).
Can that good idea from one industry by adapted for another? Can their business model be tweaked for another use?
It’s one more source of ideas for both new businesses - and marketing for existing businesses. Plus, presenting a new concept with some comparable in another industry often makes the education process much simpler.

Mark,
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I, too, look up to other businesses. They have crash-test their concept, so why not learn a bit from them? Your point of look to comparables are well taken - it’s no use to copy, say, Microsoft’s marketing strategy for a 2-person software company.
Cheers!
