Agreed that they are totally worthwhile attending. I have my own tech business and although not trade shows where I am selling something the power of networking is well worth it in my opinion.

On top of focusing on your actual giveaways, you should also stay focused on your tradeshow activities. FreshBooks seems to be leading the way in this arena by providing a free pancake breakfast and volunteer door holders (wearing FB tshirts, of course). Some really fresh and simple ideas for garnering some attention and being MEMORABLE.
