Hi Ben
You may be mixing up to different issues. When you talk about logo design it probably needs describing.
Getting together few appealing shapes based on taste of a client is one approach.
Learning about the business niche, target audience, environment and competition to come up with a logo concept is totally different cup of tea.
No online logo design company does research work. They usually request few designers to put together few shapes based on very short logo questionnaire and the one that happened to trigger clients' personal emotion wins.
So pro freelancer with previous agency experience may be more preferable here. Still this level of design is never cheap.

Hi albularyo,
From my experience, working with freelancers is a love-hate situation: You love the pricing, but you hate the scammy, low quality, bad communication and amateurish work. Some of them shine, but many don't. So, if you want to cut the chase of THE freelancer of your dream, consider use a design company to work with you. Otherwise, happy hunting! :)

I would go for the Free Lancer, as their fee is cheaper if you hired a real Logo Designer.
