The market for used vehicles is usually crowded, so you will need to be on the lookout and strike quickly if you happen to see the type you want hit the market. However, maybe you aren’t quite sure yet what kind of used car would be ideal for your purposes.

The Nissan Versa

The trunk space is ample, and there’s seating for five fully grown adults. This is also a model that does well in cold weather, especially if you put snow tires on it when the season starts to turn chilly.
The Hyundai Elantra and Elantra Limited Edition
In several parts of the country, you’ll see many Hyundais on the road. The company had to fight back from a negative reputation due to some less-than-great models it made in the 1970s and early 80s. However, a complete reimagining of many of the base models served the brand well, and now it is held in much higher esteem than it was half a century ago.
The Elantra is considered to be one of the best family-oriented vehicles the company makes. This is another one that falls into the rather broad midsize four-door niche.
If you get a relatively recent one, like the 2023 version, for instance, you can find it as the standard hybrid or as the so-called “Limited Edition.” The Limited Edition took the base price from about $25K to $35K two years ago.
If you can locate a gently used Limited Edition, you’ll get leather seats and Apple CarPlay connectivity. There is also a generous suite of safety features, including lane departure alert, front collision warning system, and an excellent rear backup camera.
The Toyota Camry
The Toyota Camry is another four-door sedan that has been a go-to for families for multiple decades now. Back in the 90s, it was almost impossible to go to any busy parking lot without seeing several of them in different colors.
The more recent versions are nice for families with teen drivers. They can learn how to drive in a vehicle that’s stable and dependable, if not particularly flashy. It’s roomy and ideal for longer road trips.
Last year marked the first time you could get this model as a hybrid. The 2024 is available in four different trim levels.
What’s perhaps best about it is the inclusion of the 2.5 L four-cylinder engine. It delivers a combination of power and fuel efficiency that is hard to beat.
Also noteworthy are the 225 horsepower and the available all-wheel drive. If you’re looking for enhanced stability, that is how you get it.
The Toyota RAV-4
Maybe you want something that came out relatively recently that can hold more bodies or equipment. If so, then the Toyota RAV-4 might fit the bill.
You can get one that rides smoothly and has plenty of room for sporting equipment, groceries, etc. The quiet interior is a winner, although some individuals who reviewed it are less than impressed by the acceleration, which has been described as lackluster compared to some others in this class.
Still, if you decide to go in this direction, you will doubtless like the MPG, which is about 27 in the city and 35 on the highway. That’s not as good as what you can get with some sedans, but if you’re determined to get an SUV, you’re not likely to do a lot better than that, at least not at the price point you will probably find one of these from the past three years.
The transmission of this one is an 8-speed automatic, and it can tow anywhere from 1,500-3,000 pounds, depending on the trim level. That is more than respectable for the price you will likely find it. The 203 horsepower certainly doesn’t hurt anything, either.
The Toyota Sienna
Sticking with Toyota, we move on to the Sienna, which can best be described as a minivan. If you want to have even more room for supplies or to carry a few of your child’s friends around, this is the option for you.
This model will allow you to save cash over the purely gas-powered vans that are currently out there. What’s probably best about it is the sliding doors for easy access and the available all-wheel drive. Again, if you live in a part of the country like the Northeast that gets pummeled by snow in the winter, you will feel glad it’s there at least a few months out of the year.
Also noteworthy with the Sienna is the hybrid powertrain that effortlessly combines efficiency with power. The Sienna is also great at accommodating child safety seats if you have some young ones who are not yet old enough to use a regular seatbelt.
You really can’t go wrong with any of these. The real trick is to first determine how much you have to spend, and then to keep an eye out for any of these models that hit the market near you.
