In becoming a wedding planner, the traditional college route is not really necessary. Indeed, while most careers nowadays require some type of college degree, wedding planning does not. With that being said, starting a wedding planning business is not a walk in the park. It’s not for everybody. There are certain traits and characteristics that any successful wedding planner must display. We will discuss these shortly.

Trait #1 – Communication

Communication is important no matter what business you are in. You want to be easily accessible to your clients and a source of knowledge and guidance. A good communicator is always willing to listen and offer a response. A good communicator is also able to get a point across no matter the situation. We all have that ability to communicate effectively but some of us are just better at it. Again, being a wedding planner is not for everyone. The better communication you have with your client, the happier he or she will be which will directly impact your business. Communication is key.

Trait #2 – Attention to Detail and Creativity

Although attention to detail and creativity is important in any business niches, they are very much emphasized in wedding planning business. Your client is depending on you to take care of the little things. One thing to remember about details is that you should never overlook anything. The smallest detail can make a huge change and affect your customer in a negative way.

If you are detail oriented, this career is a great choice for you. If you are not, then I wouldn’t really recommend it. With so many details to take care of, you need to be on top of things and on your game for the wedding to go smoothly for your client.

Trait #3 – Money Management

Wedding budget will almost always a sensitive subject for the client. No bride to be wants to think about the financial hit for her dream wedding. With that being said, money management is an important trait to have as a wedding planner because you need to stay on budget for your client. It’s your job to watch your spending for the wedding closely. Remember, the average cost of a wedding is around $30,000 so you have to make sure you are saving money wherever possible.

With so much demand, wedding planning is definitely a lucrative opportunity. However, you need to be aware of your responsibility in ensuring the success of a wedding event. Remember, a wedding is one of the most important events in someone’s life. If you are passionate about weddings and ready for the challenges, then wedding planning is for you.
